This ITC Certificate in Outdoor First Aid at SCQF Level 6 is part of the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework [SCQF].

This qualification is regulated in Scotland by the external regulators of qualifications Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Prior knowledge, skills or understanding which the Candidate is required to have before taking the qualification = None.

Units which a Candidate must have completed before the qualification will be awarded including any optional routes

There is no requirement to have completed any units previously.

Other requirements for Candidate to satisfy prior to assessment or awarding = None.

This qualification indicates an individual can undertake the role of First Aider in the rural and more remote regions of the UK where professional emergency assistance may be more than 10 minutes away.

The qualification will benefit all who need to be introduced to emergency first aid in the outdoors and outdoor first aid incident management.

Successful completion of the qualification will result in knowledge and skills that have been identified by the HSE for the safe, effective and prompt treatment of emergencies in the outdoor workplace.

This qualification will satisfy the requirements of various Outdoor National Governing Bodies that require 16 hours of assessed first aid training to maintain the license to practice for their Instructor qualifications.

Unit title: Emergency First Aid in the Workplace

The learner will:

Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider.

Be able to assess an incident and conduct a full primary survey of a casualty

Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty.

Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking-mild and severe.

Be able to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation-CPR and use an automated external defibrillator-AED:

Be able to provide first aid a casualty with external bleeding.

Be able to administer first aid to a casualty experiencing a seizure

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock and,

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries, burns and scalds.

Unit title: First Aid for Outdoor Incident Management

The Learners will:

Be able to demonstrate duty of care and first aid incident management principles for a first aider in the outdoor environment.

Such as Acting safely for all present at the incident - establishing an incident history - providing emotional support to a casualty and identifying first aid equipment for emergency incidents in the outdoors.

Be able to adapt current basic life support guidance to the outdoor environment.

Be able to conduct a full secondary survey of a casualty

Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bone, muscles and joints in the outdoor

Be able to provide first Head/spinal injury. aid to a casualty with head, neck or torso injuries in the outdoor environment.

Such as chest, abdomen and pelvis

Be able to respond to an incident involving medical conditions or illness in the outdoors.

Such as Chest pain Stroke Anaphylaxis Asthma attack Diabetic emergency.

Be able to administer first aid to a casualty suffering from cold/heat problems

Such as Shivering Hypothermia Frostbite Dehydration Heat exhaustion Hyperthermia

with a condition caused by the outdoor environment.

Such as Blisters Animal bites Stings Poisoning Object in eyes Bright light eye injury.

Know how to administer first aid to a casualty suffering from a catastrophic bleed

Skills and knowledge are assessed in each unit.

Evidence of meeting each assessment criteria is required.

The assessment evidence is generated by practical examination throughout the course by the tutor and by end of unit multiple choice question examination.

The skills of each candidate are continuously assessed by practical examinations throughout the course.

Candidates must perform all the practical techniques described in the learning outcomes
of each unit to pass.

Simulation is permitted.

The knowledge of each candidate is assessed by an end of EFAW unit multiple choice question examination.

Duration: 10 minutes.

Pass mark: 6 out of 10 for the examination.
