The qualification is valid for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course. In addition to this it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.
Learners are required to be 16 years of age prior to certification. It is also advised that learners have a minimum of level 1 in literacy to enable them to complete the assessment.
Topics include the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first-aider and providing first aid for an infant or a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally.
The qualification also covers how to administer first aid to an infant or a child who is choking or suffering from hypovolemic shock and how to treat minor injuries.
This qualification is assessed by practical observation and written questions.
Practical observation
The practical assessment is completed throughout the course delivery. Learners must demonstrate practical first aid skills, as outlined within the Highfield assessment pack.
Written questions
Learners must answer a series of questions, as outlined within the Highfield theory assessment pack. The assessor may undertake additional oral questioning to extract further information from learners if they have not demonstrated the required standard through written questions alone. These responses should be documented and stored with the theory assessment pack for each learner.
