It is intended for learners such as parents and relatives, pre-school or nursery staff, toddler group volunteers, childminders and nannies, au pairs and foster parents, or anyone who has to deliver first aid as part of their role in either childcare settings or a domestic environment.

Who is the Highfield - Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid course designed for?

The Highfield Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) qualification is designed for those learners wishing to gain the knowledge and skills required to enable them to provide effective emergency paediatric first aid.

Learners will become familiar with the role of the paediatric first-aider and be able to assess and react appropriately to an emergency situation, such as a child or an infant who is unresponsive, has an airway obstruction, has breathing difficulties or is suffering from shock.

The qualification is valid for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course. In addition to this it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

Learners are required to be 16 years of age prior to certification. It is also advised that learners have a minimum of level 1 in literacy to enable them to complete the assessment.

What subjects does the Highfield - Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid course cover?

Topics include the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first-aider and providing first aid for an infant or a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally.

The qualification also covers how to administer first aid to an infant or a child who is choking or suffering from hypovolemic shock and how to treat minor injuries.

How is the Highfield - Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid course assessed?

This qualification is assessed by practical observation and written questions.

Practical observation

The practical assessment is completed throughout the course delivery. Learners must demonstrate practical first aid skills, as outlined within the Highfield assessment pack.

Written questions

Learners must answer a series of questions, as outlined within the Highfield theory assessment pack. The assessor may undertake additional oral questioning to extract further information from learners if they have not demonstrated the required standard through written questions alone. These responses should be documented and stored with the theory assessment pack for each learner.
