The objective of the Highfield Award in First Aid at Work at SCQF Level 6 qualification is to support learners in becoming first aiders in the workplace. The content of the qualification meets the HSE requirements for training first-aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first-aid needs assessment.

The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first aider, how to assess an incident and recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness. The qualification also covers first aid skills in CPR and use of an AED and assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness such as chest injuries, spinal injuries and anaphylaxis.

In line with guidance provided by the HSE, the qualification supports / approves work place first aiders for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course. In addition to this, it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

The Highfield Award in First Aid at Work at SCQF Level 6 qualification is aimed at learners who wish to become first-aiders in the workplace. In order to register on to this qualification, learners are required to meet the following entry requirements:

16 years of age or above

It is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in English and maths.

Practical observation

The practical assessment is completed throughout the course delivery. This ongoing assessment will involve learners demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas. The practical assessment will be recorded using the practical matrix within the Assessment Pack.

Written/Oral questioning

For the theory assessment, learners are required to answer a series of questions contained within the Learner Theory Pack. Oral questioning can be used where learners need to expand on the answers they have initially provided. In this case, the assessor should document the responses within the assessment pack.
