The CITB Site Safety for Shopfitters and Interior Contractors qualification course is for first line managers, supervisors, foremen and those who have, or are about to acquire, supervisory responsibilities within the shop fitting and interior contracting industry.

The course covers all relevant legislation and other issues that affect safe working in the shop fitting and interior contracting industry. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and communication of health and safety, welfare and environmental issues.

The course will also help site managers, supervisors, and foremen to develop a better understanding of the legal, moral and social responsibilities of their role and to supervise health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions.

The CITB Site Safety for Shopfitters and Interior Contractors qualification covers all relevant legislation and other issues affecting safety in the shopfitting and interior contracting industry.

It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of control measures and communication of health and safety, welfare and environmental issues.

The course will help you understand the legal, moral and social responsibilities of your role.

At the end of the course you will have an understanding of: shop fitting and interior contracting industry problem areas, health and safety law, structure safety management, structure in controlling site safety, risk assessments and method statements, site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings, proactive and reactive monitoring and monitoring on site.

Certification for this course is valid for 5 years. To remain certified in this area, you will need to take a refresher course before the expiry date on your certificate, otherwise the full course will need to be retaken.

How is it assessed?

There are no formal entry requirements however delegates should be or are about to be responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff and workforce.

The method of assessment will be by multiple-choice questions at the end of the course and through assessed exercises throughout the course

CITB - Site Safety for Shopfitters and Interior Contractors Refresher

The CITB Site Safety for Shopfitters and Interior Contractors Refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the full Site Safety for Shopfitters and Interior Contractors (SSSIC) course and can provide proof of attendance. It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace.

The course includes a wide range of topics, many building on the previous full course programme as well as introducing new subjects

The CITB Site Safety for Shopfitters and Interior Contractors Refresher qualification This refresher brings your health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving you a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. It builds on the material in the original course as well as introducing new subjects. At the end of the course you will be able to: implement all updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation affecting your job role implement new guidance and industry best practice fulfil your responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment.

How is it assessed?

The method of assessment will be multiple-choice questions at the end of the course.

CITB - Temporary Works Supervisor Training Course

The Temporary Works Supervisor Training Course (TWSTC) is designed to assist Managers, Supervisors, Agents and Personnel on site who have responsibility for supervising all forms of temporary works.

The course has the support of a number of organisations: Temporary Works Forum, CECA, Build UK, HSE and FMB. The support of these organisations offers transferability of the course within industry.

The course gives emphasis throughout to the importance of communication, co-ordination, co-operation and competency (the '4Cs'), risk management, safety and business relations.

This course allows the Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) to:

  • understand the need for and duties of a Temporary Works Supervisor
  • understand the role of others
  • have a detailed knowledge and understanding of BS5975 in respect of this role.

Temporary works are usually safety and business-critical and require careful supervision. An accepted way of achieving this is through the adoption of the management process outlined in BS5975 which introduces the Temporary Works Supervisor. This course explains the role and the overall management context within which it sits. High risk can occur on small as well as larger sites hence understanding the essentials of good safety risk management, as outlined in BS5975, is relevant for projects of all sizes

How is it assessed?
  • 1 day of training: you must attend the full 7.5 hours.
  • Examination at the end of the day: multiple choice test. You need to pass this to gain your certificate.
CITB - Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme

The CITB - Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme course is the new industry agreed solution for anyone working in a tunnel under construction.

This one-day program is designed to help those wishing to improve their knowledge of the safety requirements when working in the tunnelling industry.

It replaces the existing three tunnelling options:

Tunnel Safety Card (TSC)

Underground Safety Passport (USP)

CITB HS&E specialist tunnelling test

The development of the CITB - Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme course was an industry led solution supported by CITB, TunnelSkills and the British Tunnelling Society (BTS). From concept through to delivery, contractors, clients and providers have been consulted, often with direct input into development.

Prior to the launch of the course a pilot was held with major stakeholders. This one day CITB Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme course covers the following topic areas: Entry into a tunnel environment, Surface works and shafts, Tunnel construction, Tunnelling plant and equipment, Control of underground plant during tunnelling operations, Emergency arrangements, Occupational Health.

At the end of the course candidates will

Be aware of legislation and standards specific to tunnelling

Know the health, safety and occupational hazards and PPE requirements in the tunnelling environment

Be able to understand risk assessment principles and risk management practice in a tunnelling environment , and how these risks are identified and communicated

Know the generic operations taking place within portals, shaft top and pit bottom areas, and their relevance to the tunnelling operation

Appreciate the basic principles of tunnel construction, tunnelling methods, and their inherent risks and how each method is influenced by ground types

Understand the hazards and the controls required with plant, equipment and services in tunnelling operations.
